She has been here before — in the garden, in the dark, in the gilded in-between. The woman at the center of this painting wears her history on her skin: intricate tattoos spiral across her throat and chest like a manuscript written in the language of transformation, each mark a chapter from a life lived at full volume. Her gaze is steady and half-masked, the eyes of someone who has seen both sides of the mirror and chosen, deliberately, to remain right here on the threshold. Around her, gold flowers bloom in silhouette against a night-black field — not the flowers of any real garden, but the flowers of a place that exists just past the edge of waking. The blue bird is her familiar, her confessor, her counterpart. Where she is still and watchful, it trembles with color — cerulean and aquamarine and the deep electric blue of a neon sign reflected in rain-wet pavement. Kat Tatz grew up in Las Vegas, a city that has always understood the alchemy of transformation: ordinary people stepping into the light and becoming something luminous. That same alchemy lives in this painting. The bees that drift through the composition are no accident — they are the keepers of sweetness and industry, small reminders that even enchanted gardens require tending. This is a painting about the moment just before becoming — the held breath, the steady gaze, the bird about to lift or choose to stay. It is for anyone who has ever stood at their own threshold and decided, quietly and without fanfare, that they were ready.
